2014-2015 News

June 2014
Preschool had a routine Ofsted inspection on Wednesday 20th May. The formal report has now been sent through and will be available through the Ofsted website in the coming days.
As you will see there are some very positive statements about how happy, settled and confident the children are and they were very pleased with the use of the outdoor area. However the conclusion of the assessment was that we require improvement in two out of the three assessment areas. These mainly relate to how children's progress is analysed, and then how the information is used to plan subsequent teaching and learning activities.

Ofsted rate settings either 1 outstanding, 2 good, 3 requires improvement and 4 inadequate; we are required to show evidence that we are addressing the areas of concern and will be re-assessed within 12 months.
We are naturally disappointed that the outcome is not as good as we would hope and trust that you will join us in supporting the staff to use this as an opportunity to make positive changes to our Preschool provision for the future. We have already made steps to look at processes and are seeking advice from our local council support.

Please do not hesitate to ask to speak to a member of staff or committee if you have any concerns with our childcare provision or the Ofsted assessment.

New Opening Hours from January 2015

In an aim to make drop-offs smoother, to make it easier to fully utilise your free funding and to allow school pickup before Preschool pickup, we are altering our opening hours from January.

Our new hours will be;

                                   AM       LUNCH       PM

          Monday           9-12         12-1      (1-3.30 Transition from January)

          Tuesday          9-12         12-1          1-4

          Wednesday     9-12         12-1      CLOSED

          Thursday         9-12         12-1          1-4

          Friday              9-12         12-1      CLOSED

From Monday 5th January 2015, our hourly rate will also increase from £3.00 to £3.25. Therefore, with a slight increase in the length of the sessions, a single session with lunch will now be £13 and a full day will be £22.75. We have not increased our fees since September 2011 (when only the lunch rate was increased), but unfortunately our costs have risen substantially in the last year or so, mainly due to an increase in the hall rent and a relatively low number of children attending the settling. We are reluctant to have to increase fees however we do remain competitive with other local settings.

We hope you understand why we have had to do this but please feel free to come and discuss this with one of the committee or staff members if you have any issues or worries about this.

Christmas Fair

Thank you to everyone who came, helped at or donated to our Christmas Fair, held on Sunday 30th November. We raised approximately £800 for Preschool funds! What a wonderful start to the festive season but of course we couldn't do it without your support. The Snow Bunny hopped away with a tummy full of hot turkey rolls and mince pies and will be delivering the children's Christmas wishes to the big man himself very soon. Merry Christmas!

Ex-Preschooler Update

We have had some updates from some ex-preschoolers who started at school in September. Well done to Daisy, Florence and Sam who are doing well at Crayke school. This month; Daisy received an achievement award for her letters writing and Sam for drawing shapes. Florence and Sam also got awards for being a 'Thinker of the Week'. Meanwhile at Sutton school, Bethan, Thomas and Henry have all received 'Pupil of the Week' awards in the first half term. Well done to all and keep up the good work.

The ease with which they have all settled at school shows fantastic testament to the transition systems that we have in place at Preschool.
Well done Debbie and team!

New Logo and Staff Update

You will all by now probably have seen our new logo - we are very pleased with it and would like to thank Jo Graham for all her efforts in getting this in place. We are currently in the process of ordering a new banner for outside Preschool which will display the logo and help us advertise to anyone passing the village hall junction. We would also like to make you aware of some other changes which have been put in place. Maggie is after many years (too many to admit to on here!!) stepping back from the Supervisor role (but don't worry she will remain an essential part of the Preschool staff picking up the Deputy role). We are pleased to announce that Debbie is taking over the role of Supervisor which is great news for the Preschool as she obviously already operates as the deputy and has a wealth of experience in the team. Please join me in thanking them both for their on going support to our lovely preschool - it would not be the same place it is without their tireless hardwork.

The newly renovated hall!

We have now returned after a lovely long summer break to the newly refurbished Village Hall to start our Autumn term. The hall looks fantastic we would formally like to say "well done" to the Village Hall Committee for all their hard work, and thanks also to the Preschool staff who worked hard in the holiday period to clear out and then move back into the hall to ensure we would be ready to start back on time.

We are currently planning this year's Christmas Fair which is on Sunday 30th November at the Grey Village Hall - please save the date as this is one of our favourite fundraising events of the year and a lovely way to start to get into the festive spirit!

We said goodbye to many of our older children who started school in September but are pleased to be welcoming many new starters this term.

Toddlers on Friday mornings 9.30 -11.00 continues to thrive with numbers ever increasing - it's great to have so many regular attendees and especially to see so many new babies joining us. All welcome please spread the word!

Leaver's Party
We had a wonderful turnout from leavers and toddlers for our final event of the school year. It was with a sad heart that we wish a fond farewell to our leavers but look forward to welcoming lots of new starters in the September term in a newly refurbished village hall!

Gruffalo Picnic in the Park

Thank you to all those who came along to help and support our wonderful but wet event. Despite the inclement weather we still managed to raise close to £500. So a big thank you to all those who turned out!

An Afterthought from the Gruffalo …

A Gruffalo took a stroll on the Sutton playing field,
his toes were wet and his fur congealed.
The sky was dark, and the rain was wet,
but the Gruffalo said it was his best stroll yet.

The children came and they played and laughed.
So the Gruffalo’s step turned into a dance.
There were stories and games and a nature trail,
a tombola and cakes and goodies for sale.

The Mummies drank Pimms, and the Daddies drank beer,
and the poisonous wart juice was surprisingly clear.
When the Gruffalo left he said ‘Well then!’,
‘I liked that stroll, maybe I’ll visit there again’.

Open Morning

We opened the doors on a Saturday and it was wonderful to see many of our regular families alongside some new faces who'll be joining us soon. The hall was set up like a normal Preschool session so family members who don't normally attend had an opportunity to see what goes on at Preschool. Children's learning journey folders were available to chat through with staff. It was a beautiful day so the outside area got good use whilst inside we made a few Funmats, ate cake and played.

April 2014

It's official... following an EGM meeting on 2/4/14 we have changed our name from Playgroup to Preschool! But don't worry we haven't changed what we do! We just want to make it clearer to prospective parents that we are a childcare facility for 2-4 year olds rather than a stay and play group.

To celebrate the change we are holding an Open Morning on Saturday 3rd May 10-12 so everyone, new and old, can see how we run. More details to follow...

Christmas Fair

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Winter Wonderland Christmas Fair. We raised a fabulous £811.00 and couldn't have done it without your enormous help and support. Everyone had a fantastic time thanks to the fairy in our grotto who waved a little bit of magic over the whole event!

Since Christmas older children have been busy getting ready for their school visits. They've had to master the difficult art of getting dressed by themselves - spurred on by the treat of wearing a spider man/princess costume if successful! They have also been celebrating Chinese New Year and getting to know the two year olds who are new starters this term.

Donation from YCA

Sutton on the Forest Playgroup and Toddlers would like to take this opportunity to thank the Yorkshire Countrywoman's Association for their generous donation of £200 to allow us to replace our existing seating in our children's book corner. As a local charity we are very reliant on donations, fundraising and grants to help ensure we can keep the valuable provision in operation. We are very grateful for the donation and are excited to receive our new delivery which we are sure the children will love!
